Thomson Atomic Theory and Biography – ThoughtCo, 2/2/2020  · In 1903, Thomson proposed a model of the atom consisting of positive and negative charges, present in equal amounts so that an atom would be electrically neutral. He proposed the atom was a sphere, but the positive and negative charges were embedded within it.

Alternative Titles: “plum pudding” atomic model, Thomson atomic model. Thomson atomic model, earliest theoretical description of the inner structure of atoms, proposed about 1900 by William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) and strongly supported by Sir Joseph John Thomson, who had discovered (1897) the electron, a negatively charged part of every atom.

J. J. Thomson’s identification of the electron in 1897 focused new attention on questions of atomic structure.

The original model of an atom, based on the discovery of the electron, was proposed by J. J. Thomson in 1904 and is known as the Plum pudding model or the Thomson model of the atom. It must be noted, this model was proposed before the discovery of the atomic nucleus.
